“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Keeps Boldly Swinging in Tone in Season 4

As a “Star Trek” fan, it’s arduous to not really feel the bittersweet sting of one other set of Wilderness Years coming. With Paramount feeling the candy sting of finances cuts and an impending merger with Warner Bros., it feels just like the higher-ups on the Huge Blue Mountain are closing up store on the Last Frontier. Its now-flagship present, “Unusual New Worlds,” has a mere two seasons to wrap up its five-year mission, and its final gasp at successful collection, “Starfleet Academy,” is burning off a pre-shot second season and shutting its doorways, hobbled by its expansiveness and the truth that nobody appeared all that serious about it. (I didn’t suppose it was all that unhealthy, within the ultimate estimation.)

To that finish, “Unusual New Worlds” has the lonely obligation of carrying on the “Trek” torch for a couple of extra episodes but, whilst its luster pale a bit by a reasonably uneven season 3. The present’s episodic nature is as a lot of a blessing as it’s a curse; sure, it’s neat to get a contemporary, feature-quality improve of the unique collection’ mannequin of episodic weekly adventures, however typically the swings acquired just a little too formidable. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman et al. discovered all of the unsuitable classes from that musical episode in season two: If comedy episodes are such successful, why not make them half of our present?

It’s in that custom that Season 4 continues mightily, in a crop of episodes as exhilarating as they’re irritating. This season was shot back-to-back with the earlier one, so it is sensible that the strategy is identical, balancing extra earnest explorations of the galaxy and our characters’ interpersonal relationships with goofy romps that make ample use of our ensemble’s comedian chops. (We had been doomed for this course as quickly because the showrunners noticed a) how expert Ethan Peck is at doing farce and b) how huge the musical episode from season two hit for followers, for good or ailing.)

What’s extra, this again half of episodes has an much more constricting mission to meet: set the “Enterprise” on track to suit the crew roster of “The Unique Collection.” The destiny of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has been baked into the present’s premise since its starting, with the longer term Captain Kirk (Paul Wesley) popping in for frequent visits on the present in ways in which stretch credulity (to not point out Starfleet rules, contemplating he doesn’t even go right here but). Season 3 added Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) to the solid, leaving solely Sulu, Bones, and (perhaps) Chekov so as to add in right here earlier than the day is out.

Is “Unusual New Worlds” trying to shut out with the very same crew configuration as the unique present? Who is aware of. However the items are beginning to fall into place, which leaves the entire thing feeling a bit like time is working out. Very like Pike himself, time is working out for this specific crew to get pleasure from their time as just a little area household, and it’ll be bittersweet when it’s lastly over.

The primary six episodes flit between normal Trek fare and these big-swing comedy premises, identical as season 3, in methods which can be each pleasant and whiplash-inducing. The present’s premiere, “Valles Marineris,” is a stern, somber journey ostensibly within the traditional Trek mould, with time warps and ethical dilemmas abound as Pike grapples with the last word Prime Directive query: do you intervene in cosmic occasions if they may result in the creation of the human race? It’s a little bit of Chilly Conflict thriller, a little bit of that Adam Driver dinosaur film; its tonal swings are a bit too huge to really feel any grounding.

Simply because the episodes caterwaul in tone, so too do they modulate in high quality. A grim “ghost ship” episode (replete with a few of the most stomach-churning gore results you’ll see in a “Trek” present; suppose “Alien: Resurrection“) will bounce proper right into a light-hearted “Hangover” riff on a pleasure planet whose ambiance intoxicates its inhabitants, wherein Ortegas (Melissa Navia) should haul a zooted-out Scotty by the hazy bacchanal of the earlier evening. It’s a enjoyable hour, admittedly, aided by fleet-footed comedian path from “What We Do within the Shadows” EP Yana Gorskaya and a neat visitor flip by “Children within the Corridor” alum Dave Foley. (We additionally get Rebecca Romijn‘s Quantity One singing a Klingon cowl of “Whole Eclipse of the Coronary heart”; Heghlu’meH QaQ jajvam, Bonnie Tyler.)

However the gimmick of throwing our solid into “Trek”-styled riffs on widespread films wears skinny, as one other episode limply gestures on the black-and-white wartime intrigue of “Casablanca” on a planet whose ambiance actually removes the colour from our notion. Then, sigh, there’s the much-ballyhooed puppet episode, wherein a “Degree 5 Transporter Accident” turns our crew (save Spock, after all) into Muppets. It’s a wonderful premise that they do a stunning quantity with—it’s a hoot to see Carol Kane given the Jim Henson Workshop therapy, and it neatly ties right into a working character beat about Spock’s rising anxiousness. However the present’s insistence on hour-long runtimes leaves them working out of issues to do with the puppets fairly rapidly.

Nevertheless it’s the sixth episode, “Off-Hour,” that rights the ship properly, bringing “Unusual New Worlds” out of the realm of pastiche and goofiness right into a stirring, simple catastrophe episode that sees the crew working collectively to carry the ship out of a slipstream wormhole that threatens to tear the Enterprise aside. For a season that has bogged itself down with myriad interpersonal relationship dramas whose endings we already know (Spock’s dalliance with Christina Chong’s La’An, Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel questioning whether or not to remain on the Enterprise), this disaster appears to drag collectively the crew in ways in which make them really feel, nonetheless briefly, just like the true inhabitants of the ship followers have recognized and cherished for sixty years now. And if “Unusual New Worlds” can recalibrate its power to take care of this specific matter/antimatter steadiness, we needs to be in for a satisfying bow to certainly one of “Trek”‘s most constantly entertaining chapters.

Six episodes screened for overview. Premieres July twenty third on Paramount+.
