Prime Video’s “Kevin” Won’t Help With the Existential Felines

“What if animals acted like folks, and people folks have been unhappy and attractive?” It’s an outdated chestnut at this level within the realm of grownup animated comedies; in spite of everything, generally it’s novel, and even cathartic, to see our very human foibles mirrored within the furry associates we love so unconditionally. Prime Video’s “Kevin,” to its delicate credit score, hangs its premise on a really relatable spin on a well-known impulse: How do you end up once more after a painful breakup? Sadly, by the top of the primary season’s eight episodes, you’ll end up wanting the present to be put to sleep.

Watching “Kevin” is a irritating expertise, if for no different purpose than its pedigree is far more prestigious than the mangy strays of the present itself. The present is co-created by Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert, ostensibly “based mostly on an actual breakup”; the break up in query comes from the pissed off millennial homeowners of the pampered housecat of the title (voiced with acerbic neuroticism by Jason Schwartzman), who, upon listening to the information, decides to strike out on his personal to determine what he actually desires.

After a few misadventures, he finds himself wandering into an adoption shelter full of over-the-top animals additionally ready for endlessly properties: Amy Sedaris‘ brassy Southern-fried pug Brandi (who belongs to shelter proprietor Seth (Gil Ozeri)), John Waters‘ snooty, cosmopolitan Persian cat Armando, Whoopi Goldberg‘s hairless, sex-addicted alley cat Cupcake, Aparna Nancherla’s disease-ridden Judy, the checklist goes on. If that voice solid sounds insane, that’s as a result of it’s, and it’s doubly surreal to listen to such venerable voices work double-time in service of a sequence of scripts so mind-numbingly crass, so half-heartedly bittersweet, that it fails to attain entertaining ranges of both frequency.

Reveals like “Massive Mouth,” “Tuca & Bertie,” and “BoJack Horseman” are clearly the stylistic inspirations for “Kevin,” from its anthropomorphized makes an attempt to depict the vagaries of millennial life in New York Metropolis to its gross-out depictions of intercourse to cheeky animal sendups of present enterprise (one working gag includes an all-horse manufacturing of Mame starring, get this, Patti LuPony). We get episodes centered on Fourth of July fireworks as a Purge-like chaos occasion, a COVID quarantine allegory about kennel cough, or a heat-wave episode that feels prefer it ought to riff on “Do the Proper Factor” however is usually about how good air con is. However then, later episodes grasp at emotional profundity, as Kevin tries to navigate a situationship (adoptionship?) with an emotionally flaky bartender (Quinta Brunson) and Armando tries to grapple with abandonment trauma surrounding a former proprietor (Cary Elwes) who left him for a girlfriend.

It’s tempting to let your guard down in these latter entries, particularly if these common points resonate with you. Whom amongst us hasn’t made the error of crawling again to your ex in a second of emotional vulnerability? Or dramatically misinterpret intentions out of naive hope or pleasure? If solely “Kevin” earned these moments, as a substitute of steering into pathos on the final second after 5 episodes of gross-out jokes that really feel half-formed at greatest. Take a shot each time Kevin impotently whines about his prolapsed butthole, or Judy giddily cheers via oodles of pus and crusty eyes. Quips about animals having Substacks or wanting to go to the Criterion Closet abound, and it rarely elicits greater than a chuckle or recognition. Oh, homosexual animals in Provincetown additionally put on leather-based harnesses? Work.

None of that is helped by the truth that, like so many streaming animated sitcoms of its ilk, it simply seems dangerous. The character designs are intentionally crude and unappealing, the animation feels pretty uneven, and the entire thing reads a bit an excessive amount of like a first-year animator’s scrapbook to register as something significantly humorous or profound. The look of the factor is designed for economic system, I get it; exhibits like these are exhausting to provide in a fast turnaround. However the chintzy, simplistic designs, cuteness giving solution to grotesque element, don’t fairly have the “Ren & Stimpy” really feel it thinks it does.

I’m not against raunch or transgression; certainly, I crave it in my comedies. However watching “Kevin” battle via one repetitive joke after one other that confuses mentioning a physique perform with making a intelligent remark about it is sufficient to drain the soul.

Kevin could also be mounted, however there’s no solution to repair “Kevin.”

Full season screened for overview. At the moment streaming on Prime Video.
